Has had a great idea on how to create Artifacts for when people want to and were asking me about the steps in creating one. Before, it was a long, drawn out process that could take a VERY long time, now its a lot simpler and easier to do, adds a LOT of lore to the story behind the creation of each one, and makes Artifacts that much more spectacular.
Ideas:
Creation - Since Artifacts are the most godly of inanimate objects, it would only make sense that they were directly responsible for the creation of such devices. Since they are unable to work for themselves on the mortal plane they need hands to mold the clay for them, in this case, those hands are the hands of mortal men and women, namely player characters and the like. When a character reaches 10 Piety points (and every ten after that) the GM will make a hidden roll on a D6, if the roll is a success then the character has a sudden urge to build something, even if they do not have any crafting skill whatsoever. They will begin to see images of materials in their minds, which they will then need to collect with great obsession. Only when all materials are gathered will they then begin the project. Once completed the item will be granted its own personal name, given to it by the one who crafted it, will officially become an artifact and whose lore will be directly based on the adventures traveled by the crafter in order to gather the materials needed for its construction.
Skill Gain from Artifact Creation: A character who succeeds in creating an artifact will immediately be given a crafting skill that pertains to its generation, and will be given at a +X2 mastery level regardless of what level it was at before. This means that Journeymen become Grand Masters, and characters that never had any knowledge of the skill become Journeymen. This does not exceed the maximum level of mastery levels, however. This ignores statistic percentages completely, so even at a 10% Charisma or other defining stat for a skill the mastery level will still be increased. This shows that the Gods have a direct influence over the skill and have given it to the character as a sort of reward.
What Skill(s) to use: There will be a table to roll on after deciding that a character has been chosen to create an artifact. This table will list first the materials used for crafting (IE: Wood, Stone, Bone, Metal, Leather) and then after that a separate roll will be made on another chart for what skill will be used based on material type (divided based on relevance to material). The GM can then at that moment decide whether or not to randomly generate what item to create much in the same way as loot, or if they already have a general idea they can give material information at that point to the player. The item will focus on the skill that is most relevant to the material MOSTLY used for the artifacts construction, so while the item may indeed contain precious stones it is mainly created from wood and so looks towards wood working or carpentry as the skill.
